Airports have an abundance of radar and radio emissions over many frequency ranges making security detection systems that utilize electrical or electromagnetic sensors unreliable and highly subject to electromagnetic interference (EMI).  Our all-fiber-optic security sensor is not affected by radio frequencies or electro-magnetic interference (EMI). In such environments, the most reliable solutions for perimeter security applications are built on fiber-optic intrusion detection systems for fence applications, complemented by microwave sensors for volumetric intrusion detection.

Fiber SenSys (FSI) is an approved vendor supplying many of the largest petrochemical companies in the world with perimeter security solutions. 

Fiber SenSys systems transmit light from a laser through the sensor and analyze the distortion of that light to detect threats. There is no electricity in our fiber-optic sensors to ignite vapors or fumes nor are the sensors affected by EMI, RFI, lightning or proximity to electrical cables. With our remote capabilities, the alarm processing units can be centrally located eliminating the need for communications and power in the field. Infrastructure costs are further reduced by installing electronics in a secure, central location up to 20 km away. With this architecture, only passive optical components are installed in the field. Environmental conditions such as temperature, lightning, and corrosive liquids and gasses become irrelevant making Fiber SenSys an ideal choice in these environments.

Substation and Electrical Security

The security of electrical substations impacts the reliability of the electrical grid in a city or town.  Increasing frequency of attacks on electrical substations and the on-going threat of the terrorist/saboteur makes continual evaluation of substation security programs a necessity.  Most substations appear impenetrable, but with close inspection, it is relatively easy to identify areas of the facilities where unauthorized access with intent to damage, vandalize or otherwise intrude upon the property may occur.

Unauthorized access to electrical substations endangers the lives of the intruders, employees and inhabitants of the nearby community. The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) has been designated by the US Department of Energy to coordinate critical infrastructure protection activities within the electricity sector. NERC has issued a number of advisory security standards for electrical utilities, including guidelines pertaining to physical security of their facilities.

According to NERC, each facility should implement physical security measures at their critical substations to safeguard personnel and prevent unauthorized access to critical assets, control systems, equipment, and information that may be resident in the substation. Each entity should implement substation security solutions in a way that is consistent with the criticality of the substation and sufficient to provide appropriate situational awareness of activity at these substations so that the entity can initiate an appropriate and timely response.

Physical Data Security

Protected Distribution Systems and Physical Networks:

The protection of information technology networks is a priority both within the private sector and branches of the U.S. Military at the Department of Defense (DOD). Ensuring that national security information is never compromised forms the basis for all network communications security initiatives. It is widely known that the fiber-optic or copper cables that form network backbone raceways are vulnerable to intruders that might physically tap into their data streams.

When deployed in parallel within a network conduit, embedded in a carrier, or used to physically protect passive optical networks (PON), the Fiber SenSys Alarm Processor Unit (APU) is the core component used to alarm the network conduit or the raceway. The APU, as the integral part of the SecurLAN® network protection model, enables a network carrier system to meet the DOD requirements for Protected Distribution Systems (PDS), a government requirement for physical protection of classified network data.

It has been demonstrated and verified that SecurLAN solutions are offered at the lowest cost per zone in the industry. The products have also been approved and certified for the protection of the PDS, and are compatible with all varieties of network architectures, including secure passive optical networks (PON).

In the context of classified DOD networks, Protected Distribution Systems (PDS) is a system of carriers (conduits, ducts, etc.) that are used to distribute Military and National Security Information (NSI) between two or more controlled areas or from a controlled area through an area of lesser classification (i.e. outside the SCIF or other similar area).

SecurLAN is compliant for use in network Protected Distribution Systems (PDS) at U.S. Government installations built in accordance with the guidelines of CNSSI No.7003 (September 2015) Protected Distribution Systems (PDS).
